Well the last couple of days have been great! Yesterday everyone flew around the valley all having a fun time, today it was a tad more stable but equally as good flying conditions… but blue thermals today, with good climb outs and some fun glides being shared by pilots checking out their glide rates against each other crossing the valley. There’s a couple of few Omega 8′s out here now, pacing up against some of the other gliders. Dennis had a fly on one yesterday, although would have preferred a smaller size I think so didn’t quite get the full perspective on the glider, so no report just now.
Unfortuantely, no photos either, as Dennis squashed my camera with the new bus, so it seems I’m definately going to have to get a new one now! In the meantime I’ll attempt to take some pics with the mobile or try to cadge some pics from others…
We’ve got pilots here at the moment, so hopefully some xc’s may be in the offing. Today some were certainly achieved around the valley, more of the same tomorrow…here’s hoping!

It’s been good for the beginners this week, they’ve both managed to acquire their EPC’s and CPC’s with good launches, landings and some thermaling all good confidence building stuff, hopefully they will continue to improve and enjoy their flying.
For me, it was work no personal flying, as I was grounded on launch, for Dennis it was one quick flight down to landing to be on radio for our clients but it was a good productive day all round. The weather was good for the most part, but has now deteriorated and tomorrow is not looking very promising.
It’s a bit sad, as Rusty (my motorbike) has been sold… just when I was starting to get back into it after all this time, isn’t it just the way. O well, maybe another time. I do miss her not being there though and theirs an empty space in the garage now…
Quite busy on launch again today, lots of tandems as well as beginners, pretty much a full house. Here’s a couple of pics of the Hair Bear Bunch, tandem pilots!

Well, after the excitement of the French Open, with the official results now on display. It was ‘back to the office’ and today, it was busy with the Dutch here ‘clogging’ up the launch
We’ve four guests, two on EP/CP one free flying and another late booking who is at the local school. Fortunately, it was a good day for our beginners and first flights were had by both, so happy, smiley faces all round. Dennis tried out a Niviuk Hook, which looked and flew beautifully, whilst I was basically grounded all day… I thought that’s what you get when you’re a naughty teenager..?!!! ‘grounded’ … brings back memories!
Weather is due to deteriorate tonight, but hopefully flyable again in the morning.

The French Open has been running since the 18th July, and is set to continue through to the 24th July… whether there are any more tasks I’m not sure as the forecast is not looking favourable.

French Open - Day 1, Les Gets Launch
(Before everyone arrived!)
Anyway, I managed to get an unexpected place and made it for the the first day! But that was it. It was well organised with breakfasts and lunch included. It was an interesting gathering with loads of top rated pilots. I was happy to be assisted by Tom Payne, on launch at Les Gets on the first task, where I also met up with a few more Brits in the shapes of Mark Hayman, Martin Dockerill and Chris Harland (who I met earlier at registration). It was good for me just to meet up with these guys and have a bit of good ole banter.
I was one of the first up on launch and enjoyed the quiet and wonderful views, before everyone arrived. It was nice to take a cable car, then chairlift up, so there was barely any having to carry extra large rucksack on an evermore sweaty uphill hike! So was feeling quite refreshed and not all overheated, and bothered. The competition was centred around three sites being Les Gets, Samoens and Mieussy, hense the reason for our little ‘outing’ the other day! If pilots were staying in Les Gets a bus was provided to take them to the other sites and vice versa from Samoens, so all the sites were intending to get a look in. They almost managed to cover all the launches but the weather wasn’t making an easy job of it.
As far as the women contingency were concerned they were pretty much mostly top ranking ones and all seemed friendly enough, on the ground! Once in the air though, that’s where I felt at my most vulnerable like a single tuna in a starving shark pool! It was quite ferocious in part, and I was more concerned with avoiding a mid air than thinking about my thermal placement (this wasn’t just the women I might add!) it got me pushed to the outer rim of the thermal which took me an age to try to climb out from, as the inversion was a thick layer and I had found myself in deep treacle, trying to find a climb out… that was basically game over for me. First French Open, interesting, fierce but again, I’ve gleaned some minor gems which I’ll keep quietly hidden in my para-pearl box of wisdom! Whether I actually have the opportunity to aire any of this competition information I’ve gained so far this year I’ve yet to find out..?!!! Certainly nothing has shown up in any results though! except maybe how to lose?!! … give it time…. give it time…
Day two the task was stopped due to the weather developing into a level 3, and an almost similar situation for task 3, although I’m not sure if these two tasks are valid or not. I think if the task is ‘stopped’ it’s still valid. There were a few bones of contention over the stoppage of task 3, and a number of pilots didn’t fly. As for me, my competition is over but I’m glad for the experience I had and managing to get in was amazing enough in the first place! It was also great to meet up with some of the Brit Pack!

Dodging the Rain
Unfortunately no flying today. It was possible first thing through to late morning but when we got to launch, after some classroom stuff, it was looking pretty dark all around the valley so we were pretty much cornered! The weather was marching in from all quarters although the tandems, and a few understandable and with the greatest of respect ’desperates’ squeezed in a flight just as the rain arrived. We decided to keep our gliders dry on this occassion.
Couldn’t blog yesterday as the server had been down for most of the day, and has only recently been back up. At least yesterday we all got our feet of the ground, it was very stable in the morning, and try as I might I couldn’t get a climb out, I clocked one glider that managed some height scraping across from Chamonix but that was it. Everyone who took off at the same time as me were all having a difficult time trying to climb out, and we all ended up landing. The second time, it was much easier…. Dennis’s turn then, so I missed it!
The wind has picked up now but may well blow itself out by the morning, here’s hoping for not such an early bird flight tommorow!

Samoens Landing
Windy day today, no flying, so we decided to take a drive out into the Samoëns valley and have a look at some other sites, that we haven’t visited for some time.

Mountain Bike Trail Les Gets
First Samoëns, we saw a couple of gliders doing some top to bottoms launching off a secret place, because we couldn’t find it! It was a low safe take off though, so no climb outs, too windy anyway! We made our way up to the unofficial Borgeoise Launch where it was howling! Far too strong, but at least is was nice to go up and have a look. It was south facing and would be great when the wind isn’t so forceful a presence. From there we looked straight across to Samoëns, which would start to work later in the day. We had a nice meeting with an Argentinian Pilot working there who was giving us a really detailed lowdown on the area.
Next we tootled off to Les Gets, further along the valley, lovely town, and great for mountain bikers it’s really geared up for mountain biking in the summer with carved out sections, an excellent purpose built bike park! It’s a popular flying site but no-one flying today. No matter it’s nice to do a spot of tourism occassionally.
Lastly a stop off in Mieussy, where they’ve changed the landing area, much better. There’s a good drive up a track to the launch, again a great launch area! On the way back a visit with our friends who live in St. Sigismond, have recently returned from a UK visit, with lots of lovely goodies from Blighty, aaah! Late afternoon a couple of gliders were practicing a few acro moves flying off Agy, over the house where a thermal was elevating about eight buzzards! Nice spot to drink tea! It was very late before the wind dropped and only two acro gliders flew, and only for a few minutes!
Well it’s Bastille Day here today, and the fireworks are letting rip at the moment. Dennis is on a Transfer run this evening, and may well get caught up in some celebratory traffic!
Just a couple of few pics in the slideshow.

- Peloton Tour de France. Have pointed out Lance Armstrong.
The Tour de France was getting closer today, so we just had to go up and offer our support! It’s virtually impossible to live in France and not get roped into it in one way or another! I have to say for the moment that we got to see it, it was fantastic! I’ve always had the greatest admiration for Lance Armstrong, after having read both of his books, what an amazing inspiration he is to so many. I bought both books for Dennis for part of his Christmas present and wanted to read them myself. The first one, “It’s Not About The Bike.” got me hooked, I just had to read the second one “Every Second Counts” which was equally as excellent. It just left me amazed… the commitment, determination, dedication, intensity and touching on the miraculous! A truly exceptional and incredible champion, and a great privilidge to see him and the whole Tour in action.
It was a great opportunity for us to be there near Flumet, on their arrival and swift departure we managed to get some pics! Really, really enjoyed it…. and ‘endurance!’ what an amazing feat…!!!
We watched the end of this stage, stage 9 later, and what a great finish to a 204.5 kms gruelling ride climbing mountain roads in the heat they deserve nothing but the greatest of respect! It was an unexpected battle for stage 9 at the end!
There’s a number of pics in the gallery.

Stage 10 tomorrow… they will be embarking on 179kms from Chambrey down to Gap!

Another scorcher today. The clouds were looking good early on, but kept growing… before long a dark solid base was forming. There were a few gliders around lunchtime getting high up above the Fiz range. It was just so hot, we decided to enjoy the time we’ d got, it’ll all kick off again soon enough. Gliders were getting high, but going nowhere. Tomorrow hopefully the temperature will drop and become much more pleasant.
The storm arrived with thunderous cracks and lightning flashes, it’s getting to be quite a regular pattern, it pours with rain but does not remain cool for very long, before the humidity returns with tropical intensity. The cellar is the coolest part of the house just now, maybe we should relocate down there.

Tour de France Stage 8
Another sultry steamy day in the Alps. It’s darn oven hot in the house, and hot enough outside to fry eggs on the pavement! We’re keeping cool with the fan in full motion and enjoying the Sunday afternoon sports on the telly! There are a few gliders out doing top to bottoms but nothing more.
Interesting watching F1 this afternoon, and we’ve got the Tour de France hitting the Alps today, completing stage eight, in our neck of the woods. If you’re interested there’s a great live tracking/update to have a look at. I bet those guys would welcome some cooler air given the heat.
Then there’s the footy final this evening, although can’t say as I’m that enamoured with football…. just not my thing, and those joke shop trumpets?!….well, I ask ya?!

Big storm today! It’s been tropically hot with monsoon like temperatures, resulting in an incredible storm with the loudest lightening cracks I’ve heard in ages!! Thought that the storm would clear the air, but the temperature is still heavy, humid and oppressive even the rainfall appeared hot!

the new chariot!
We collected our new vehicle from Chambrey yesterday so Dennis has been occupied with all the latest dashboard technology. Our old VW minibus has served us well over the last decade, but it’s been time for a change for a while. We managed to find a really nice ‘almost’ new VW Caravelle with ‘some’ mod cons that turned out just great for what we need, especially with the Airport Transfers and all, and I can’t tell you what a relief it is to have the air conditioning!
Meanwhile, I decided it’d be good for me to upload a few of my flights onto the BHPA xc league, but try as I might, couldn’t load any! For one thing my name is different on my instrument so doesn’t tally with the registration, so tried to change it, then was confronted with the file not being of a suitable format! Anyway, it seems I’m just going to have to leave it change my name on my instrument (when I get it back!) that is xc league friendly, forget the flights I’ve already flown this year and start completely from scratch! My instrument is away for repair at the moment as it’s been recording some outlandish readings. Hopefully I’ll get it back soon…. it’s been gone a week and I really miss it!
I tried to upload some of my flights onto our ‘flightlog’ page but unless I use the Garmin, I can’t do it unfortunately, am just not computer literate to that extent! Anyway, the way round was to set up links to XC Contest where I don’t have any difficulty in uploading my flights so I’ve put a few up in the flightlogs page with links. They aren’t that spectacular by any means, but then there’s always time….
